The skufia is a brimless hat with the soft sides worn by Orthodox Christian clerics and Eastern Catholic monks. The crown of the hat varies depending on the style in which it is constructed. The Russian style has a pointed crown, the Greek style is flat and pleated while the Romanian style is flat with raised edges.
The color of the skufia also depends on its intended wearer. Skufia’s that are awarded to clergy as a medal of honor are typically constructed out of red or purple fabric whereas the Eastern Catholic monks typically wear black skufia. Additionally various degrees of ornamentation whether jeweled or embroidered can be found on different styles of skufia.
