The Black Tie - When to wear and how to match

The black neck tie is the most elegant and formal looking tie. The more plain the black tie appears the more conservative and the more rigid of an impression it gives. The plain black tie is therefore also called funeral tie. If the plain black tie is skinny or narrow, 2.5" or less, it gives a very fashionable and trendy appearance. The skinny black tie is the most retro looking 60s vintage tie.

Black ties with more structure in the fabric are typically less shiny than a plain black silk tie. It is therefore slightly less formal or festive. When combining a pattern into the actual design of the black tie such as fine stripes in lighter colored gray, the black tie is very fashionable. There are many variations of the black tie and as a general rule: The more plain the tie and the shinier the silk the more formal the tie. Patterns, motifs, fine stripes, or tiny polka dots add a nice touch to the festive but slightly boring looking plain black tie.
