Tips to Find a Tailor

Have you ever thought about how you might look in a custom tailored suit, but do you also think that this type of luxury is a little too pricey? Well, if a suit is part of your daily attire, then giving a custom tailored suit a serious thought is actually quite reasonable. Below are a few tips in what to look for when choosing a tailor that will create a suit for you that drapes like a dream:

Check References
Do you know anyone that is getting their suits custom tailored, then simply ask who they use! If you can’t find anyone that does, then go to a few high-end retailers and ask around. Chances are that with not much time you will compile a list of names with tailors that are being recommended. Another good point of reference is the Internet. Check for reviews on yelp.com or similar sites that reviews small local businesses.

Length of Experience
Even though it is true that everyone has to start somewhere, don’t be the “new” tailor’s guinea-pig. When your are spending the extra cash you want to make sure that your expectations are being met. Simply ask how long they have been in business, and how long they have been tailoring clothes.

Attention to Detail
Talk to each tailor that you are considering about the process to make your custom suit. Listen to their attention to detail in the manufacturing. If you find someone that enjoys what they are doing and are passionate about their work, chances are they are spending more attention to detail, and will create the perfect fitting suit. Learn what steps are hand-sown and what are sown by machine.

Samples of Work
Ask the tailor if he/she can show you some sample work. Not only competed suits, but also different type of fabrics. Ask many questions about what the pros and cons are of each fabric and how it will fit into the suit that you had in mind. A good tailor will give you plenty of fabric options not just in the colors, but also threads, materials, and fabric weights.

Creativity and Vision
Bring in pictures of suits that you had in mind. Find out what the tailor’s vision is in making your dream suit. Is he/she more conservative, or fashion-forward? You want to make sure that your visions are aligned. Also ask if he/she had any additional input to make a similar suit to the one you show on the picture. If your visions are aligned he/she will most likely be able to add suggestions that will make the suit even more unique.

Time-Frame
Check how busy the tailor’s schedule is and what time frame it will take to complete the work. This is especially crucial if you need the suit for a special occasion such as an important business meeting, wedding, or formal black tie event. If the suit has to be completed by a specific date, make sure to share this with the tailor. Don’t cut the time too short to allow some additional them for final adjustments.

Price
Get estimates before placing an order. Different materials and suit cuts cost affect the final price of your custom suit. It is not uncommon for a high-end custom suit to cost as much as $3,000.
