Paul Smith is a British fashion designer who started a fashion label under his name in Nottingham England in 1970. Although Smith had no formal training in design he has earned an icon status in mens fashion all over the world. In 2000 he was knighted by Queen Elisabeth II and he received the coveted title of “Sir”.

Smith career in fashion started after a severe bicycle crash which forced him to stay at a at a hospital for several months. During his stay he met several artists and designers, and after being released he was inspired to get involved in this newly discovered world of design and fashion. Then, in 1970 he opened his first store in Nottingham, England. Initially he mostly sold other brands such as KENZO and Margaret Hall, but eventually started to come up with his own creations. His girlfriend, a graduate fashion designer, encouraged him to take evening sewing classes, which eventually led him to start his first complete collection of mens wear.

Paul Smith’s designs are known for a “classic look with a twist” –as he calls it. The designs are classic-conservative while the detail in stitching and lining add a modern touch. Especially his signature multicolor striping pattern is visible in pocket and suit linings in his men’s collection. Up to this point Paul Smith is the labels head designer and he takes pride in being so closely involved with the day-to-day operations.
