After bashing congressmen on their poor tie choices, we thought that some praise is in order. A lot of people might think that analyzing the fashion sense of congressional senators is a waste of time. That said, it’s not uncommon for people to overlook the importance of how one dresses; especially those who spend a lot of time in the public eye. Senators often have enough difficulty getting people to side with them on important issues as it is, and unprofessional attire certainly doesn’t help anyone’s case. While congress is far from being known as a hotbed of modern fashion, there are a few senators that have proven they don’t need any help choosing the right tie. The following are the five best ties in congress.

1. Alexander Lamar’s Horizontal-Striped Cherry Red Tie
Sometimes what makes a tie truly attractive is subtlety, and Tennessee republican senator Alexander Lamar certainly knows how to make this work for him. His trademark cherry-red tie features horizontal, textured stripes, resulting in a subtle illusion of movement that elevates any suit he pairs it with. Judging by the clean knot and perfectly centered dimple, it’s worth noting that Lamar also seems to have a strong handle on tying the perfect double Windsor.







2. Ron Wyden’s Orange Geometric Tie
Pairing suits with the right tie is all about creating a healthy amount of contrast, and Oregon democratic senator Ron Wyden has this down pat. His orange-red geometric tie truly stands out when set against a navy suit and light-blue dress shirt, creating just enough contrast without causing his appearance to be “too much.” The same can be said about the tie’s pattern, which happens to be both unique and familiar at the same time. Jim Demint owns one of the most attractive ties in congress. Featuring a tightly-knit pattern of black and grey checks, this tie adds the perfect amount of contrast when paired with a black suit and white dress shirt. The fine micro-check pattern also gives the illusion of movement, which a grabs the viewer’s attention without distracting away from Deminit’s face. While not a tie that one would want to wear on a daily basis, it’s simply perfect for adding a bit of elegant flair to any ensemble.

North Carolina republican senator Richard Burr always seems to look sharp, thanks in part to the warm orange tie he wears frequently. While we applaud Burr’s choice of tie, we think he can improve on how this tie is tied. Instead of overwhelming him with complicated instructions on exotic double Windsor knots, we think he should start out practicing the classic Four in Hand.







5. Orrin Hatch’s Lilac Geometric Tie
Utah republican senator Orrin Hatch has a few questionable ties in his wardrobe, but the lilac geometric tie he wears frequently may be his saving grace. Featuring a flowing, attention-grabbing pattern and smooth sheen, this tie is perfect for taking what might otherwise be a mundane ensemble to the next level. Now if only he could only apply this sensibility to his other ties, which tend to be a bit on the gaudy side, he may just be a contender for our upcoming Best Dressed Men in Politics Award.
