The paisley is a pattern that was first found in India in the 16th century. It is said that this pattern resembled the leaves a young lotus tree - a symbol representing health, fertility and luck. With the invention of the Jacquard loom, this intricate pattern could be woven into fabric. Eventually the pattern also made it to Europe and quickly was a design choice for many luxury fabrics. During the 1930s the paisley pattern also became popular on mens neckwear.


It is not surprising that the long tradition of the paisley pattern is often times associated with a traditional, and slightly more conservative necktie designs. Many fashion experts put the classic paisley tie in the same family as classic British regimental ties. This family of neckties is also often associated with the old-English "country club look". While the paisley is a design with a long heritage, it can in fact be quite fashionable.
