Black Tie Ensembles as Seen on the Red Carpet


That red carpet events are filled with well dressed people should be of no surprise. Both male and female celebrities are dressing to impress. They pull out all the stops and whistles to stand out, to make an impression, and to be one countless best-dressed lists. Certainly, not all of them do a great job and we have spotted plenty of fashion faux pas - especially when it comes to formal black tie events. Instead of focusing on the biggest dress code offenders, I wanted to spend some time showing you those men that have done a truly great job embracing this elegant dress code.

You can count on George Clooney to be always one of the best dressed men at red carpet events. You can tell just by looking at the different black tie ensembles he wears that he enjoys dressing up. In this picture he chose to wear a tux with notch lapels, a larger butterfly velvet bow tie, and mother of pearl button studs. It is a simple look that truly embraces what black tie is all about: classic, elegant, and timeless.

Tom Hanks shows us how to wear a double breasted tux the right way. A perfect tailored fit and a larger spread bow tie (butterfly) that is proportionate to the wider shawl lapels is what makes this look so award-worthy. The crisp white pocket square folded with a so-called presidential fold adds nice contrast.

Ryan Gosling shows us how to dress in stylish black tie. The tapered and fit of the tux perfectly compliments his body type, and the slightly narrower shawl lapels give this look a young touch. The rest of the look is kept minimalistic elegant: simple turn down collar, regular sized self tied bow tie, simple formal dress shirt, and traditional black button studs.

Of course, as current James Bond, Mr Daniel Craig has no choice but to be an expert in black tie. It is the little detail that impresses us on this look: Shawl lapel single-breasted tux, pointed batwing bow tie, and pleated front tuxedo dress shirt. You don't have to be a 007 to pull of this look...
