Blazers and sport coats are one of the most versatile clothing pieces in a man's wardrobe. The possibilities to match the blazer with other clothing items and accessories allows for endless combination -ranging from professional business attire to an elegant-casual look. If you are new to wearing blazers, then this post will teach you some basics any man should know.

Blazer Styles & Cuts
Most important when choosing a blazer is the right fit and cut. If you prefer a more trendy, sportier look, then choose a blazer that is more tailored and has the so-called "European Cut". Just like when buying a suit, make sure that the cut compliments your body type. Men with a fuller figure would be better off with a standard American cut.

Besides the cut, fabrics play a large role in choosing a blazer. As a general rule, never choose a blazer that is made from more than 25% out of a synthetic fiber. Synthetics don't breathe as well as natural fibers do, and will also eventually loose their form. If you like a more casual look, the a Corduroy blazer is a perfect choice. Want something more elegant, but still casual-trendy? Then the Velvet blazer might just be right for you. Want something classy and timeless then choose fine wool. Thicket and heavier fabrics should be worn in the winter. The herringbone pattern, gray, tweed blazer shown in the picture above, is a perfect jacket for the fall.

Next, think about the colors. Traditionally the blazer is always navy in color, but recently designers have added many color options you can choose from. So, if you want something classy and timeless than the navy blazer is the one to choose. The color you choose is personal preference, but make sure to wear lighter shades and fabrics in the spring and summer.

Now, think about the patterns. The simplest and safest patterns is the so-called windowpane plaid, which is essentially just a series of squares that run across the coat. Other good patterns are the Glen plaid, herringbone, houndstooth, and the Prince of Whales Check.

Blazers are all about the details, whether it is ribbon lapels, patterned silk linings under the collar, or embroidery. They can be playful without being embarrassing.
