A shrug is a type of tailored womens sweater that is worn much like a cardigan. Shrugs are very easy to spot as they are much shorter then vests and typically only cover the arms, upper back and chest. It should be noted that full chest coverage is not a hallmark of most shrugs. In fact some shrugs do not even have a fastener that closes at the chest; instead they are essentially sleeves that are joined around the back.
Shrugs may be either long or short sleeved and traditionally were constructed out of knitted yarn; however more recently shrugs have been constructed out of many other types of material.
