An Iverness coat is a style of formal overcoat that comes in both daytime and nighttime variations. The evening iverness coat is recognized by its black color and wide and baggy cuff length sleeves. The evening coat was considered to be a highly formal piece of attire and suitable for white tie occasions. The day time version of the iverness is constructed in the same fashion but out of a coarser tweed fabric to make it less formal.

The iverness coat is commonly confused with the iverness cape due to the large bat wing like sleeves on the coat giving the illusion of the wearer having a short cape.
