Liz Claiborne is a well known American designer and brand. The Liz Claiborne brand covers everything from a diverse clothing line to eyeglasses.
Born in 1929 to American parents living in Brussels, Belgium Claiborne spent many of her developmental years attending art school before filling the roll of design assistant to many prominent fashion designers. After a successful career in fashion Liz Claiborne died at the age of 79 on June 25, 2007.
With the help of partner Art Ortenberg, Claiborne founded the company Liz Claiborne Inc in 1976 and shortly thereafter took the company public in 1981. What started as a modest sized clothing company that featured jeans, quickly spread to men's sportswear, plus size women's clothing, shoes, suits, men's neckwear, and later eyewear and activewear.
One of Claiborne 's greatest influences has to do more with her marketing savvy than clothing design. Claiborne was the first designer to insist that all of her collections be displayed together in department stores rather than in separate departments. Today this is a widespread practice amongst many designers and it has become slightly unusual to see modern department stores, particulat the higher end ones, without dedicated designer showcases.
