Louis Vuitton was a famous French born luggage maker who lived from 1821 to 1892. Louis Vuitton began his career as a truck and luggage maker for wealthy families in Paris. As his notoriety grew he became the personal truck and luggage maker for Napoleon III’s wife.

In 1853 Louis Vuitton founded his iconic business with his unique take on the traveling trunk. Prior to Louis Vuitton's design most trunks had rounded lids to promote water runoff. Vuitton’s trunk, however, had a flat top making it easily stackable and thus very popular with travelers.

In 1888 Louis Vuitton created the most recognizable iteration of the famous Louis Vuitton canvas pattern. Interestingly the brazen display of the Louis Vuitton logo was a means of keeping competitors from copying his signature style rather than an ostentatious display of branding.

Today the Louis Vuitton company continues the tradition of its founder by creating high quality, high priced, pieces of luggage that are constructed out of branded canvas. In addition to luggage the company is also known for their ready-to-wear clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, sunglasses, leather goods, and also neckwear - costing close to $200 a piece.
