Hermes

Hermes is a high-end French fashion designer founded in 1837. To learn more about this designer, please click the link on the left.

The Luxury brand Hermès was founded by Thierry Hermès in Paris in 1837 and was initially a workshop specializing in harnesses for carriages. From the beginning the brand tailored to European noblemen, and the company became known as a maker of one of the finest wrought harnesses and bridles for the carriage trade. Quality materials and quality craftsmanship earned the company awards as early as 1855.

In the 1870s Hermès son, Charles-Emile Hermes, took over the management of the business. Besides moving the company location near the Palais de l'Elysée at 24 Rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré, he introduced saddlery and began retail sales. The company continued to expand, but not until 1918 was the first clothing item introduces. It was shortly after the company obtained the exclusive right to use the newly invented Zipper for leather goods. Thus, in 1918 the company made a fine golf leather jacket, and made the first step into becoming a fashion designer.

Hermes continued to explore new ways to use the exclusive right to use Zippers on leather goods. As a result the company introduced handbags in the 1920s. Then in the 1930s the company added other materials and fabrics. In 1937 the first silk scarf for women was introduced - one of Hermes' trademark items still today. Then in 1946 the company made their first silk ties.

Today Hermes employs over 7,000 people and has reported earning in access of $700 million. Although Hermes offers quite a large selection of clothing accessories and perfumes, Silk scarves, neckties, and handbags are still the signature goods of the brand.
