Double-Breasted jackets were most popular from the 1930s to the 1950s, and then again throughout the 1980s. Today double breasted jackets are much less popular, but are still common on certain overcoats - such as the trench coat.

For suit jackets, so-called blazers, are commonly double breasted. The front flaps of the jacket overlap and are secured with one or two buttons. Most double-breasted jackets have peaked lapels, and have either 2 or 3 rows button, most of which are decoration. To further support the fastening, a functional, inner-button, called the jigger, is commonly added to parallel-fasten the over-lapped layers together.
