Wash, But Don't Wear in The Shower

Not Looking at the Industry Dress Code
Knowing how to dress according to the type of job you are interviewing for is important. If you are interviewing for a “white collar” profession then suit and tie are a must. While a tie can be left off when applying for a “blue collar” job it is still recommended to slightly overdress than being too casual. Dressing up shows that you care, and it shows the potential employer that you are serious about the job.

Being Too Fashionable
Unless you are applying for an “artsy” profession, you do not want to make a fashion statement during a job interview. Pick a conservative suit, classic white dress shirt, and a tie that is not too loud in color and design.

Too Formal
Never wear a tuxedo, don’t pick a suit with a shawl lapel, and never wear a suit that has any satin fabric finishes. Also to avoid are patent leather dress shoes, solid colored bow ties, pleated dress shirts, or shirts with hidden front buttons. All these are part of black tie attire and should never be worn in a business setting.

Wrong Accessories

Tips to Polish Your Dress Shoes

Even the nicest suit can look shabby when worn with dirty dress shoes. When polishing your dress shoes, there are several products that will help you bring out more shine. Below are the pros and cons of each product as well as tips on how to use it.

Shoe Cream & Paste
Most shoe creams contain mineral oils that help restore the natural shoe color. Creams are much more liquid than wax allowing to penetrate into the leather keeping it flexible while still adding shine. They are also much quicker and easier to use than wax but unlike wax do not cover cuffs very well.

Shoe Wax
Wax is the classic product for polishing dress shoes. It is excellent for covering cuffs and it brings out the best shine. When shopping for shoe wax we suggest to look for a product that is made from natural Beeswax. The drawback with wax is that excessive use can seal the leather and cause it to dry out and crack.

Liquid Polishes
Liquid Polishes are good for travel. It is very easy and super fast to use. But using it as your primary way to polish your shoes is not recommended since it can dry out the leather causing it to crack and break.

Water & Stain Protective Spray
Water repellent stray should be used for the rainy season. Especially dress shoes with leather soles should be sprayed a few times to avoid water coming in from the sole. Using such sprays on the upper leather is a little controversial. Some argue that those sprays containing silicone or any petroleum base causes the leather to dry out and break. Best for the upper leather is mink oil. It is quite expensive but will not damage the leather while still adding more shine.

Leather Cleaners
Shoe cleaners are excellent for removing stains, dirt, as well as excessive wax and shoe polish build up. We recommend using cleaners three to four times per year. Cleaners that should be avoided are products containing types of acids and solvents which can cause damage to the leather. Excellent products are saddle soap, Murphy's Oils Soap, and Ivory Soap. Make sure to wide the show down with a damp cloth after cleaning to remove any residue of the cleaner before conditioning and polishing the shoes.

Pros and Cons of Wearing High-Tech Fabrics

Designers and retailers often times advertise a particular clothing item with words like "wrinkle free", "easy-care", "breathable", and so on. This is possible thanks to newer high tech fabrics. Advances in fabric making have created many new opportunities for clothing manufacturers to create fashionable, yet also functional clothing pieces.

The secret lies in applying nanotechnology to fabric and textile making. Nanotechnology is a science that studies materials that are smaller than 100 nanometers which is one billionth of a metric meter, or about 1/100th of the width of a human hair. The first one to apply nanotechnology into fabric making was Chemist David Soane in 1998. Creating microscopic thin yarns and weaving these into fabrics made clothing wrinkle resistant, stain repellent, and also able to wick away body moisture.

How "Nano-Fabrics" are Made
Let's look at the process of making Nanotech Cotton - a cotton fabric commonly used for wrinkle-free dress shirts and khaki dress pants. First, nanotech fibers are created by pressing the man-made, crystal-like building blocks through molecular scale nozzles. These so-called nanofibers are then immersed in liquids and mixed in with the much larger cotton fibers. After the nanofibers have bonded with the cotton, the fabric is spun into regular sized yarns - which actually appears completely unchanged to natural cotton fibers. This nano-tech cotton yarn is then woven into fabrics that look like cotton but is more wrinkle resistant and stain-repellent.

Pros and Cons
The benefits of using such high-tech fabrics is obvious: They are extremely easy to care for and much more convenient. They eliminate trips to dry-cleaners and make ironing almost unnecessary. So what are the drawbacks? First of all, some people prefer to have a crease in their dress pants that runs alongside the leg. Second, some nano-fabrics are less breathable making them much more uncomfortable to wear in hot climates. Finally, which is actually the largest concern to most, are formaldehyde fumes. The resin finishes of the fabric slowly emits fumes over its lifespan. These vapors have been associated with tiredness, headaches, coughing, and other allergic reactions.

Travel in Style: Un-Tourist Yourself

Fashion might not be one of your primary concerns when you travel, but you also have to consider that it affects more than just the way you look. Numerous studies have shown that you’re treated better when you appear more respectable, no matter where you are in the world right now. There are definite perks for your losing the notorious tourist look and giving yourself a style upgrade for your vacation.

Bring the Right Bag
The fanny pack is easily one of the most notorious telltale indicators of a tourist being a tourist. Although the belt bag has long been praised as a practical choice for security-conscious travelers, its strengths end there. You could do much, much better than that.

A belt bag is a bad idea for men – fashion- and otherwise – for several reasons. First, it draws attention to your midsection; a big neon marquee couldn’t have done a better job.
