Did you recently get an invitation calling for black tie attire but are not sure what this really means?

You are definitely not alone. We receive questions on dress code almost daily and decided to create this section. Does Black Tie attire really mean that you have to wear a black neck tie? The simple answer is no! Just the thought of a crowd where everyone is dressed exactly the same is very amusing. The fashion industry does not exist to create a uniform and boring impression. Instead it does exist so you can choose the style that best expresses your character and your mood. Now does that mean you can dress any way you want to a black tie event? Well, althought it is encouraged that you express yourself there are some guidleines you should follow if you want to be invited back.

Black tie attire simply means that a formal dress code is appropriate. If you want to be on the safe side, then a uni-colored silk tie in festive colors such as silver, gray, black and even white are good choices. Typically the less colorful the more formal a tie appears and the lower the chances of standing out. If you do want to stand out however, be careful not to dress like a clown. Stay with single colored ties and chose some color such as a light shade of pink, cream, or a burgundy red. Very fashionable is also the skinny tie that has its roots in the 70s. Mostly younger men choose this tie as it appears more fashionable and expresses a younger and slightly more sporty look. If this is your style then do consider a festive and single colored tie.

Bow ties are the most formal neck wear accessory and for many formal occasions this is the best and only choice. Again the same principle of color applies. You can never go wrong with the black bow tie. Often times lighter colors are preferred for occasions occurring during day such as wedding, etc. The lighter colors such as a white or silver bow tie appear much fresher and happier than the more rigid black bow tie.
